Sheweloff Residence

Sonoita, Arizona

This extensive landscape architecture project illustrates the beauty and creativity that can grow from a strong relationship between landscape architect and homeowner. The project encompasses design of hardscape, walls, fencing and gates, lighting, pool and spa, raised vegetable garden within garden structure, boulder placement, earthwork, vegetation and development of unique amenities.

The 5,500-square-foot new home sits on 80 acres of grass-covered rolling hills with pristine 360-degree views of nearby mountains, natural stands of oak, juniper and mesquite and native wildlife. The 4,600 feet elevation provides a crisp quality to the landscape and the big sky lends its self to the feeling of the wide-open spaces. The home was designed in the shape of a plus, allowing four patio/courtyards to surround the house, each of which now connects to the landscape and view in a unique way. Large windows throughout the house enhance the blending of interior and exterior spaces.

Project highlights include: a custom-designed, double-panel, steel mechanical entry gate set in steel-flanked masonry; a boulder/vegetation berm to screen view of the highway; walled and open courtyards accented with steel planters, flagstone paths, acid-washed colored concrete parking area and, in some cases, continuations of interior flooring; pool and spa with view-friendly steel fencing and colored concrete decking; a raised-bed vegetable garden repeating steel accents from other landscape elements; screening utilities with steel gates and fencing.
